The national forensic science technology center was established in 1984 in response to the increasing amount of crime scene contamination in the United States. It was originally funded by the Department of Justice and the U.S. Congress. In 2004, the National Forensic Science Technology Center joined with other scientific and engineering organizations to form the American Society of Crime Scene Contamination Scientists (ASCSS).
